The white column to the right-hand side of image 1 (with 2 plaques) is the pier for the telescope. It goes all the way up through the building without touching it. This isolates the mechanism from the building, which could be moved or buffetted by strong winds. This would in turn cause blurring of deep-space photographic images which need long-exposure times - sometimes requiring in the region of several hours exposure for each image.

Office 01: CES "relaxes" among the many computers that "assist" today's up-to-date astronomer. The modern computer helps speed up all areas of astronomical research, such as the drawing up of new and revised star-charts.

... however, I think the three below more than make up for their lack!
