Open House at the Observatory April 2, 3 & 4
8 pm to 10 pm (weather permitting)
This special open house is part of a worldwide effort in celebration of the International Year of Astronomy, declared by the International Astronomical Union. We invite visitors to come look through our 22-inch research sized telescope, or a special tripod with mounted binoculars for scanning the sky. We will also have a replica of Galileo's telescope so visitors can see what the limitations of his instrument were during his time. There will be an instructional video for viewing also. The Moon will be at first quarter and will make an excellent target for viewing! The open house is to commemorate the first use of the telescope on the sky by Galileo in 1609. His discovery of moons around Jupiter and the rings of Saturn revolutionized the thinking of the world. Observatories and astronomy groups will hold viewing sessions as part of the effort, resulting in 100 hours of continuous observation of the heavens.
